. . . Our Stockade neighbors Family & Child Service of Schenectady held their 6th Annual Golf Ball Drop — their signature fundraiser — last night at Stadium Golf Club, in Schenectady. Once again, nearly a thousand numbered golf balls that had been “purchased” for $10 each were dropped from a helicopter, which was flown by Bruce Mowery of North Country Heli-flite. The owners of the three balls closest to the pin won the following grand prizes:
- 1st Prize (ball #605): $1,500 cash went to Tom Hosey of Lubbe & Hosey, PC.
- 2nd Prize (ball # 590): A custom-designed jewelry piece courtesy of Sondra’s Fine Jewelry went to Nancy Zicker of Clifton Park.
3rd Prize (ball #23) a Samsung Plasma 43” Television went to Dave McGraw of Niskayuna, who was present at the event.

The Golf Ball Drop event also included a fine buffet dinner prepared by the Stadium Golf Club kitchen, silent auction, and the selection of many raffle prize winners. Ric Mitchell of B95.5 radio and former sportscaster Rip Rowan were the co-Chairs of the fundraiser, and Dustin Hart again provided his DJ services. As happened the past two years, I enjoyed the food and the company, and had a special treat finally meeting Julie and Neil Eklund of Green Street and dining with them. I hope many Stockadians will purchase golf balls and dinner tickets next year and help support the good work of the good people of Family and Child Service of Schenectady, who’ve been headquartered at 246 Union St. across from the Van Dyck for over sixty years.
Here’s a slideshow with photos from the event. There is also a gallery of the photos below that offers descriptions and a larger version of each picture.

Photo Assistance: Many thanks to Jeremy Noble, FCSS’s Board President, who snapped the photo at the top of this webpost showing a bucket-full of golf balls cascading onto the fairway Friday evening. Unlike last year (see the photo at the start of this paragraph and atop our 2010 Golf Ball Drop posting), I was both poorly positioned and too uncoordinated to capture the cascading balls this time — despite there being four buckets and not two like last year. I’m most grateful to Jeremy and his iPhone.
