Arthur’s Market opens officially

ArthursOpeningDay6PM

update: Arthur'sGrandOpening-corner26Jan2014  Arthur‘s Grand Opening celebration was Jan. 25-26, 2014. See “A Stockade Survivor” (Gazette, Jan. 27, 2014, B1, by John Enger; subscription req’d) .

ArthursOpeningDay3PM . . . DSCF0191 Richard Genest “officially” opened his new version of Arthur’s Market, yesterday, December 18, 2013.  Richard calls it Arthur’s Market and Historic Coffeehouse. In the photo at the head of this paragraph, the Arthur’s Market Open sign rests atop a snowbank in front of the store. The Market will be open daily 8 AM to 8 PM (later on evenings with entertainment); and is, of course, located at 35 North Ferry St., in the Schenectady Stockade.  [click here for the Arthur’s Market website — updated link, July 2016 –  where you’ll find the Who, What, When, etc. of the Market, including its calendar of upcoming performances.]

Back in July, we posted “a very good sign at Arthur’s“, showing the return of the hanging sign, confirming the rumors that Richard, proprietor of the Moon & River Cafe on S. Ferry Street and member of the Kitchen Jazz band, planned to resuscitate/resurrect/renew the venerable Stockade tradition.

a stroll in the snow before Sunday brunch

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

 – slideshow photos taken in the Stockade and Riverside Park before 9 AM Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 –

Long before Sunday brunch, I was out strolling with my camera to explore the Stockade after our first real snowstorm of the season.  I traversed only Washington Avenue, Front St. to Lawrence, N. Ferry to Union St., Union back to Washington Ave., and then Riverside Park. Snow removal was the predominant activity I encountered, plus a single dog-walker (in the Park), a smoker on a frosty stoop, a pre-schooler helping dad, and a young woman bringing home a steaming cup of coffee for herself and a lucky guy.  There were also a pair of police cars and a flatbed tow truck on Union Street, of course.

It was a rather gloomy day for photography, despite the clean blanket of snow, so I did my best to find splotches of color. Yes, I braved the cold so you wouldn’t have to get bundled up in order to enjoy the neighborhood.  It was my pleasure, of course.  There are about 40 photos in the Slideshow above and Gallery below.

Stockade holiday greetings for you to use

HolidayGreetingsBulbs  Quite a few people complimented me on an image of a round tree ornament reflecting the Lawrence Circle, which was in our posting last week on the arrival of the 2013 Stockade Tree.  So, I decided to make a set of similar photos of bulbs hanging from the Tree at Lawrence Circle, adding the phrase “Holiday Greetings from the Schenectady Stockade” to each image.  The bulbs have different views of the Circle and its surroundings and varied color schemes.  (I’ve also tried to choose images that minimalize the presence of the photographer in the reflection.)

Please feel free to use one or more of the images as part of your own holiday greetings, without having to ask permission, as long as they are used for non-commercial purposes.  If you click on a photo, your will get a larger version that is a downloadable jpg. file.  The largest side of each photo is 1000 pixels, which should work well in email.  Contact me, if your use calls for a larger file to have sufficient resolution.

The six images are in the collage above, and presented separately immediately below.  Please accept my personal heartfelt and hardy Stockade Holiday greetings and wishes.

p.s. Here’s an out-take photo that I did not use for a greetings bulb because there is too much of me in the reflection.  But, I like the shapes and colors, and think it deserves a space on this weblog:

a heartwarming tree lighting

DSCF0129

– Lawrence Circle after the tree lighting –

A lovely tree, along with good weather, spirits, and food, made the annual lighting of the Stockade holiday tree this evening another example of our neighborhood’s special traditions and sense of community.  The Slideshow below has a handful of photos that offer a glimpse of the event.

DSCF0119-001 Arthur’s Market was such a natural, welcoming location for the post-lighting party, that I hope Richard Genest and the Stockade Association will make having the holiday get-together at the Market on the Circle across from the Tree another long-running Stockade tradition.

Our posting last Wednesday has photos of the installation and decoration of the 2013 Stockade Tree.

IMG_3073 This morning (Tuesday, Dec. 3rd), a crew from the City of Schenectady once again helped to deliver, install and decorate the annual Stockade Tree (f/k/a Stockade Christmas Tree), including securing it in the permanent tree stand and placing the star atop the tree. Colleen Macauley and Susannah Hand supervised the installation for the Association, and Diane DeMeo helped them with light-stringing and hanging large, gold and silver spherical ornaments. Stockade Association president Mary D’Allessandro was also on hand to welcome the Tree. Last Saturday, Carol DeLaMater and volunteers decked the fence around the Lawrence Circle with bows and boughs.

IMG_3102 Even under a gray, overcast sky, the tree and Circle look lovely. The 20-foot tall balsam fir was again donated by the NYS Tree Nursery at Saratoga, and arranged with them by Stockadian Susannah Hand, who is employed by the Nursery.  (Click here for photos of past Stockade trees.)  The Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place at 5 PM this Sunday, December 8, followed by a celebration with holiday snacks.

IMG_2976-001 update (December 1, 2013):  We’ve added a few more photos showing the completed copper flashing and shingles, etc., on the steeple.  Read about it in the Schenectady Gazette, “St. George’s restores its crowning glory: Restoration work on the steeple at St. George’s Episcopal Church has been completed” (Nov. 30, 2013, by Jeff Wilkin; online subscription req’d); and see the December 2013 Stockade Spy at 12.

new [L] and old weathercocks, plus Andy K.

After five months without its weathercock, St. George’s steeple had its weathervane re-installed on November 20, 2013. The beautiful old rooster was too deteriorated to be refurbished, and was instead replaced with a replica made of copper, by Lou Venditti of Specialized Sheet Metal, and painted a golden color.  Its decorative ball also had to be replaced and is constructed of Sapele wood. The scrollwork and pointer were welded, stripped and repainted by Tom Madelone.  A major contractor was steeplejack Dave Knox of Advance Construction and Steeplejacks. Robert A. Petito, Jr., AIA, was the project architect and Dan Kennison did overall supervision.  As the project’s structural engineer, Jack Healy of Ryan Biggs Associates assessed the condition of the steeple and designed the steel replacement support for the weathervane assembly.

For more on the weathervane and other aspects of the steeple repair, see the 27-page “St. George’s Steeple Project Report“, and especially David Kennison’s article “St. George’s Historic Weathercock” in the Episcopal Education column of St. George’s September 2013 Newsletter, at 8-9.  After much research, Kennison believes the initials “MW” or “MWp” on the weathercock are those of the original blacksmith, Myndert Wemple, with the smaller “p” being an homage to his grandfather, whose nickname was “Post” or “Poest”.

For photos and history of the old weathercock, see our earlier posting “in praise of Stockade weathercocks“.

people-watching at Stockade-athon 2013

– there are hundreds of faces in this posting; who do you know? –

– Don’t miss our earlier posting, “Stockade-athon 2013 flows through the neighborhood“, which is a 40-photo look at many of the leading runners as they arrived at Lawrence Circle, the halfway point of the race.

You can find complete searchable race results, and identify runners by their BIB numbers, at Albany Running Exchange.  –

IMG_2836  The Stockade-athon is a real treat for a people-watcher, with more shapes and sizes and ages of healthy people streaming by in an hour than at any other time all year.   As I’ve done the past few years, I’ve put together a separate Stockade-athon Faces posting that has my favorite shots taken today as the Stockade-athon 2013 visited the Stockade.

IMG_2374-002 Because people enjoy seeing pictures of themselves, friends, and even perfect strangers attending an event, I’ve included a few slightly blurry photos that I liked too much to discard.  Fellow Stockade resident Stacey Lauren-Kennedy is a Schenectady Gazette photographer who once reminded me that being in focus is merely a bourgeoisie concept. Stacey inadvertently ended up in a few of my photographs today while she was covering the Race.  She is a good example of why I like being a people-watcher during the Stockade-athon; and, why I need to look a bit harder sometimes.

Stockade-athon 2013 flows through the neighborhood

IMG_2303-001– Mike Fout & Josh Simpson behind the lead car approaching Lawrence Circle –

– There was no sunshine, but the rain stopped before Stockade-athon 2013 passed through the Stockade Historic District neighborhood, and spirits seemed high on the road and curbside. –

There are over forty photos in the Slideshow that accompanies this webposting, which focuses on the first wave of runners reaching Lawrence the Indian in the Stockade district, the halfway point of the race.  I moved on from the Circle right after master runner Emily Bryans (who placed 101 overall) passed by.  After that, I took most of my photos at the intersection of Front St., Washington Avenue and Cucumber Alley.  The result is the posting “people-watching at Stockade-athon 2013,” which has an additional 110 photos.  If you’re hungry for even more images of the Stockade-athon in the Stockade neighborhood, click here for a posting with links to our extensive Stockade-athon photo coverage, from 2009 – 2012.

You can use this short URL to share this posting: http://tinyurl.com/2013Stockadeathon

Results: Find them all in a searchable chart at Albany Running Exchange.

  • The 1st and 2nd place winners — Michael Fout and Josh Simpson — were also first and second to Lawrence Circle.  The next to finish were Sam Morse, Patrick Geoghegan, and Jaime Julia.
  • The 1st and 2nd place runners in the women’s division — Hanna Davidson and Laurel Leone, respectively — were also the first and second women to reach Lawrence. The next to finish were Katie O’Regan, Alexandra Varsanka, and Sara Dunham.
