update (May 12, 2009): Last night’s sunset along the Mohawk was too good to miss, so I snapped a couple of shots from the Washington Ave. dead end, before being lured back to that bed of tulips. E.g.:

My plan to enjoy the eastern sky at sunset last night was waylaid by a patch of tulips in Riverside Park.

cherry blossoms return to the Stockade (magnolias, too)

Cherry blossoms have been emerging this past week in the Schenectady Stockade, especially along Washington Avenue. Here are a few photos:

winter’s greatest hits (Part 2)

It’s only been a year since I started snapping sunset pictures. Many good ones “got away” on nights when I decided to stroll the Stockade without my PowerShot or never got out at all. On other evenings, I failed to do justice to the loveliness or majesty of the sunset — often because of poor timing, but also due to a lack of experience as a photographer. One thing I can say for sure, however:

My very favorite photographic sunset experience took place on December 28, 2008, along the Mohawk River at and near Washington Avenue and Riverside Park. No matter what direction I looked, and through several sunset stages, the December 28th sunset thrilled my eyes, and left me wishing Ms. Right had come along to share it with me.

For instance:

feeling upsIdes down

This is last night’s sunset, snapped from the Washington Ave. deadend. I couldn’t resist flipping it, so that the river is on top and the sky on the bottom. Blame it on the Ides of March (discussed here at f/k/a, with a related haiga there, and some senryu/haiku here).

going with the floe

The Albany Times Union reported this afternoon that “A flood warning along the Mohawk River corridor has been canceled because the ice jam released.” (“Flood warning over, for now,” March 10, 2009). Earlier today, the Schenectady Gazette posted a “video of the ice jam breaking” along Riverside Park, noting:

“Schenectady County Emergency Coordinator John Nuzback said the worst fears of flooding have been calmed, for now. Precipitation could still cause the river to swell.”

Below are pictures taken by me at about 7 PM, when gray clouds once again prevented a colorful sunset. The Mohawk River is indeed flowing, with ice floes rapidly passing by along the Schenectady Stockade. (Compare today’s shots with our pictures in yesterday’s post “ice jams along Riverside Park“, March 9, 2009):

Did you come here for a lovely Mohawk sunset? It may be days before the skies clear enough for a good one. So, I’ll leave you with a sunset shot from my friends’ backyard at One Cucumber Alley, on the last day of February, along the Mohawk.
