Takoma Park’s colors — hues kidding hue

Colors of Takoma poster (click for details). .  Colors of Takoma poster

Takoma Park Historic District Sign It’s not often that I’m away from the Schenectady’s Stockade Historic District and Mohawk River for an entire week.  But, I just spent 8 days visiting various friends in and around Washington, D.C., while staying with John Redman and Marianne Clarke, in Takoma Park, Montgomery County, Maryland.  Their home is located in the Takoma Park Historic District, so I was still surrounded by fine old homes, located along hilly and tree-lined streets — mostly Victorians and craftsman bungalows (many constructed from Sears kits in the 1920s).

2 Cucumber Alley - Stockade – 2 Cucumber Alley, Stockade –

Here in the Stockade, I’ve come to associate striking shades and combinations of colors with our sunsets along the Mohawk, not our historic buildings.  Even when Stockadians decide to create an adventurous color scheme for their residences, the palette tends to be rather subdued — with any intense shades used sparingly on a bit of trim. [One exception, of course, is the lovely, recently-painted home at 2 Cucumber Alley, seen above.]

Westmoreland Ave. Pumpkin - Takoma Park In the Takoma Park Historic District, on the other hand, eye-popping colors have become a tradition, and have been celebrated recently in the Colors of Takoma poster shown at the head of this posting.  As explained in the Historic Takoma Newsletter (Dec. 2008, at 5), the poster is the work of Ross Chapple and Lea Chartock who live in Takoma Park. (For more “Colors of Takoma Park,” see the FourthWall weblog, by the folks at Takoma’s Design Farm.)

My appetite for gaudily painted homes was whetted immediately on my arrival in TP, while swinging lazily on John and Marianne’s modestly-hued front porch, with this view to the right (as usual, click to enlarge the photos)

The unconventional colors reminded me that Takoma Park has long been thought of as the hippie-lefty headquarters of the DC Metro region.  These days, it has mellowed into a gray-ponytail, aging Boomer enclave.  Shortly before I moved from DC to Schenectady, in the article “How to Get Rid of Rats in Most Humane Way” (September 25, 1987), the New York Times stated:

“This is not your average Washington suburb, and never has been. Its 17,000 residents love a good argument, especially one over on the leftish side of things.”

As you can see below, the free-spirited residents of Takoma Park, Maryland, continue to strut their stuff with their colorful homes:

Simply Haiku Journal features Riverside Park

A foggy morning last autumn produced some of my favorite Stockade photos of 2008.   I turned some of them into photo “haiga“, which are images that include a linked haiku or similar Japanese-form poem.  Five of them were accepted for publication by Carol Raisfeld, the Modern Haiga editor of Simply Haiku: A Quarterly Journal of Japanese Short Form Poetry.

Yesterday, Simply Haiku posted its Summer 2009 issue online (Vol. 7, No. 2), which included a portfolio with my Riverside photo haiga.   Here are two of them.  You can see all five of the haiga at the Simply Haiku site.

Planting Day in Riverside Park

Jennifer Wells - Planting Day maestro The lovely floral garden displays in Schenectady’s Riverside Park may seem magical, but they do not get there by magic.   A very large part of the credit goes to Stockade resident Jennifer Wells, for the design, planting and continuous maintenance of the Riverside gardens, with the assistance of a few loyal helpers [see the update below for Jennifer’s thank-you list, which names names].  The plants are provided by the City of Schenectady parks department as well as private citizens (mostly Stockade neighbors).

Planting Day 09 a

This morning, Jennifer and other Stockade stalwarts organized the annual Planting Day at Riverside Park.  Along with a contingent of Stockade neighbors, more than a dozen Union College students toiled between 9 AM and Noon today (Saturday, May 16) to prepare the flower beds and plant may varieties of annuals.  [Daily Gazette photographer Marc Schultz stopped by to capture images and names; his photo appears on B4 of the May 17, 2009 Sunday Gazette.]

Where tulips stood tall just last week (see our tribute and some of the 2008 Stockade tulips), today you found Union College students bending and stooping, as they weeded and prepared the bed for a new round of plantings.

Planting Day 09 c

. . .  PlantingDay09d

Thanks to all those who helped to remove a mountain of weeds and move another mountain of mulch today.

update (May 17, 2009):  Here’s the thank-you sent this morning by Jennifer Wells to the Historic Stockade Yahoo Group:

I would like to thank David for pitching in yesterday and his wonderful blog.  I also extend thanks to Greg Sauer, David and Barbara Marhafer, Mike from North Street, new neighbors Greg and Debra – hope everyone got to meet this wonderful couple- Carol Delamarter, Mary Delasandro, Frank Gilmore, Debbie Lambeth, Susannah Sherwood, Jennifer and Larry Schmidt, Gloria Kishton, Bev Elander, Chris Waldron, Ellen Desmond, Joan Bessarbbe, Mabel Leon, Lyn Gordon, Beth and Elizabeth Petta, and all the wonderful Union College Crew who worked so hard.  Thank you all to those too, who helped and I may have forgotten to mention by name.

We had a wonderful day, got most of the work done and it was just a pleasure to see all who came out to help.  For me, this aspect of a neighborhood working together to make a better place for all of us gives my spirit a lift!

Thank you again.

PlantingDay09b . . .

. . . and a thoughtful thankyou message from Ellen Desmond:

“A special thanks also to neighbors Stephen and Cathy Boese for their work on our Ingersoll Avenue entrance garden and tennis court gardens. Cathy designed, supplied plants for, and installed the new tennis court Hosta garden. Lovely and serene. Stephen mulched both gardens.  Three Union crew women installed all entrance garden annuals. Their design. Awesome, and great teamwork.”

PlantingDay09mulch Jennifer and her helpers will give me (and many, many others) months of pleasure in the park again this summer and fall — and will surely inspire a snapshot or two for suns along the mohawk.

cherry blossoms return to the Stockade (magnolias, too)

winter’s greatest hits (Part 2)

28Dec08 It’s only been a year since I started snapping sunset pictures.   Many good ones “got away” on nights when I decided to stroll the Stockade without my PowerShot or never got out at all.  On other evenings, I failed to do justice to the loveliness or majesty of the sunset — often because of poor timing, but also due to a lack of experience as a photographer.  One thing I can say for sure, however:

My very favorite photographic sunset experience took place on December 28, 2008, along the Mohawk River at and near Washington Avenue and Riverside Park. No matter what direction I looked, and through several sunset stages, the December 28th sunset thrilled my eyes, and left me wishing Ms. Right had come along to share it with me.

For instance:

this early-stage sunset view from my backyard:

This is last night’s sunset, snapped from the Washington Ave. deadend.   I couldn’t resist flipping it, so that the river is on top and the sky on the bottom.   Blame it on the Ides of March (discussed here at f/k/a, with a related haiga there, and some senryu/haiku here).
