a lucky few plant tulip bulbs along the Mohawk

– 9 A.M. – the start of bulb planting day at Riverside Park –

– Concetta [L] and Hainuo choosing bulbs –

Jennifer Wells, Carol DeLaMarter and Tom Hodgkins (with his three youngsters) showed up this morning to plant tulip bulbs near the new columns at the west entryway to Riverside Park.  [The photographer dug a few holes, too.]  It was a brisk autumn morning under dramatic clouds and blue skies, and the workers mixed their tasks with schmoozing and smiles, and got the job done in about 90 minutes.

I hope the photos in this webpost and slideshow will make a few of our readers want to pitch in next year, for the Spring planting and the reprise of tulip planting next November.

.  . The results come Spring will surely be worth the effort. As they say in the lawyer ads, prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome, but our 2010 flower beds suggest it will be worth a visit to the Park to check out the tulips come April (click on a photo to see a larger version; find more Stockade tulips here):

40 minutes and 40 photos in the fog

This morning, I spent forty minutes (starting around 7:30) with my camera in Riverside Park as thick fog gave way to a sunny blue sky along the Mohawk River, here in the Schenectady Stockade.   The following slideshow presents 40 representative shots in chronological order as I strolled the Park.  It starts at the new entryway columns on the west end of the Park, goes east toward the Overlook and then the children’s playlot, and follows the same route back. Along the way, I encountered flowers, a canon, dogwalkers (and Clifford), slides and swings, a man fishing in a boat, geese, foggy bridges, and more. Unfortunately, I was an hour late for the scene of a crew team rowing out of the fog.

a glimpse of a not-so-ugly car show

Most of the vehicles at yesterday’s 2nd Annual Ugly Car Contest were far from ugly.  Sponsored by the Schenectady Kiwanis to help support their youth services grant programs and M.A.D.D., this year’s show featured 50 vehicles (twice as many as the first show last year), which were judged in 14 categories.  For more details, click here to see the flyer for the event.

Fair weather and a blue sky mottled with puffy white and gray clouds were the perfect backdrop for the event, which was held in a parking lot at Nott Terrace and Liberty Street.  The Schenectady Sunday Gazette covered the event, at page B2 of today’s newpaper, and offers 13 photos of the Ugliest Car in this online article (with subscription).

I didn’t get there in time to see or photograph most of the cars, but the following collages can give you a sense of the vehicles on display.  Click on either for a larger picture.

.

. . . entry was free for spectators . . .

 . . .

My hard-working friend and event volunteer Doug McPhee told me that the 2nd Ugly Car Contest was a big success, and it sure looked that way to me.  Next year it will be held on September 20, and the third Saturday of September will apparently be the date for future Ugly Car Contests.

dropping golf balls benefit FCSS for the 7th time

– click here for our 2013 Golf Ball Drop post –

Family & Child Service of Schenectady‘s 7th Annual Golf Ball Drop was held yesterday evening (Friday, September 14, 2012) at Stadium Golf Club in Schenectady.  The event is the signature fundraiser for the not-for-profit organization, which has worked to make families stronger from its headquarters at 246 Union St. in the Stockade for over sixty years. Nearly a thousand numbered golf balls that had been “purchased” for $10 each were dropped from a helicopter, which was flown by Bruce Mowery of North Country Heli-flite.  The three balls closest to the pin won this year’s grand prizes.

The winning golf balls, and their owners, were:

  1. Ball #576: Jodi Lawson won two round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines and some traveling cash.
  2. Ball #627: Bill Offenbacker won a custom-designed jewelry piece courtesy of Sondra’s Fine Jewelry
  3. Ball #4: Frank Privaterra won a “Wicked” night out on the town in Schenectady, with the Proctor’s show, dinner, and more.

Many Board members and staffers, and other volunteers made the 7th Annual Golf Ball Drop a success.  And, many sponsors provided financial support and donated for the live auction and raffle prizes.  105.7 Crush FM was the honorary media sponsor; Fennimore Asset Management Inc (FAM Funds) was the Birdie Sponsor.  See the FCSS website for a full list of sponsors.   Radio personality Ric Mitchell was the emcee for the gala event.

61st Stockade Outdoor Art Show a breezy success

– John Elliott’s 1st Place “Best of Show” photograph, “Queen Ann’s Lace.” –

. click on an image for a larger version .

The 61st Stockade Villagers’ Outdoor Art Show [website; Facebook] had to be shortened a bit due to storm warnings, but — after spending about six hours among the art and people, and snapping many photos — it’s easy to conclude that this neighborhood tradition was another enjoyable and successful Stockade event.  Here are almost a hundred images of the winning art, and the exhibits, artists and visitors, along with street scenes in our lovely historic district.

  . . .

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Winners: John Elliott, Mabel Leon and Steve Kowalski:

.

. .  the Young Artist Awards . .

Anna Torri, Elizabeth Petta and Quinn Guerino

.

Winners of various special awards: 1. Best Depiction of the Stockade Neighborhood: Linda Kollar; 2. Oakroom Artists: Robin Rosenthal; 3. People’s Choice: DiAnne Tracy; 4. First-time Exhibitor: Cynthia Romano.

.

Linda Kollar’s winning painting for Best Stockade Depiction:

– 15 N. Ferry St. –

.  . . Separate images of the above winning art can be found in the slideshow and gallery below . . .

 . . .

– an exhibit alongside the old Arthur’s Market [L], with detail [R]-

Honorable Mention was given to:

Linda Starr, Frank Gilmore,  Robin Rosenthal, Debbie Park-Boussu, Robert Bootier, and Tim Prendergast.  Examples of their winning work can be found below, along with scores of other photos from often-blustery 61st Stockade Outdoor Art Show.

The 2012 Outdoor Art Show will surely be remembered for the nagging wind that required constant vigilance to protect the assembled artwork and people.  Jeffrey Bisaillon‘s piece “Coastal Front” is at the head of the paragraph and sets the tone.  Mabel Leon’s hands-on efforts (below) at securing her art is representative of the efforts of many other of the exhibitors:

.

The following Slideshow has over 90 images from the 61st Stockade Outdoor Art Show. [Feel free to help me identify any of the artists I have missed in my descriptions, by leaving a comment or sending me an email.]

Below the Slideshow is a gallery containing each image.  Click on one for a larger versionSharing: Artists are free to use any of the photos of their work in this posting, and others may use them for any noncommercial purpose, with an attribution to “suns along the Mohawk” and the photographer, David Giacalone.

Although they are helped by many hard-working volunteers, SVOAS is very much a family affair, and heartfelt thanks go to Connie and Marty Colangelo and Deb and Matt Volk, and all those in the Stockade family who help make the show a success.

There are many family acts among the Art Show exhibitors, too, including:  The Alcevedo father and son; Beth and Elizabeth Petta; Claire and Gale DellaRocco; Emma Boers and her grandmother Sylvie Spradlin; Molly Biggers and mom Linda. [please let me know if I have missed any related exhibitors]

Stockade scenes a year after Irene

  .  .  .

– the River end of Washington Ave., then (R) and now (L) –

The current Times Union’s feature “Irene photos: then and now”, moved me to put together representative images of flooding in and near the Stockade that I took last year with photos taken of the same scenes over the past few days.  The results are in the Slideshow below.  Each photo collage is also found in the gallery under the slideshow; click on the gallery image for a larger version and roll over it for a description.

– Riverside Park playlot  (R: Sept. 9, 2011 T.S. Lee flooding)-

The pretty pictures cannot erase the turmoil that Irene and Lee caused for many of my Stockade neighbors and people throughout this region and the Northeast. I hope peace and stability have returned to their worlds.  For more photos of Stockade flooding after Irene, see our coverage here and follow the links to other postings.

Zoppe’s old-fashioned circus tent on Broadway

The old-fashioned Zoppe Italian Circus has taken over the lot at the corner of Broadway and Hamilton Street, for its 4-day Proctor’s run (August 9 to 12, 2012).  A teaser in today’s Schenectady Gazette got me out around 11 A.M. to the corner of Broadway and Hamilton St. under a blue sky to see the European-style big-top tent, which is 56 feet high and seats 500 people. (See “Big top goes up as Italian circus prepares for weekend visit”, p. B5, by Terance Haight, Aug. 8, 2012)

Click here for more information about the Proctor’s presentation. The Zoppe website has many pictures, links to articles, and information on a documentary video about the family and its circus, which began in 1842.

The new Children’s Wing of the Schenectady County Public Library was opened on July 30, 2012, and has been getting rave reviews. (See, e.g, a Gazette article about the opening, and an admiring editorial from a prior skeptic; subscription needed to view articles.).

Thanks go out to Friends of the Schenectady County Public Library for their many contributions to the success of the Library’s new addition project — from over $300,000 in donations, to advocacy that kept the main branch open during the renovation and construction.  I’m very pleased to say that the Friends’ website is currently using a collage of photos seen in this posting in its masthead. (Click here to see my passionate reaction in May 2008 to the County’s inane “plan” to close the main branch for 18 months in order to implement the expansion project.  The outrage and advocacy of the Friends group greatly helped organize a public outcry and applied pressure and persuasion that quickly achieved a far more palatable “compromise.”)
