a year ago we blossomed

YWCAforsythia22Mar2012 A year ago today, Washington Avenue surprised us with premature blooms on cherry trees, forsythia bushes, magnolia trees, daffodil plants, and more, due to a week of extraordinarily warm March weather.   We posted about the event in “early heat brings early blossoms” (March 22, 2012).  Today’s expected temperature high is 44 degrees lower than last year, when we had the record high of 81 degrees. Here are two comparison collages (double-click on each for a larger version):

Posted by: David Giacalone | February 13, 2013

Valentine anticipation

Fans of our romantic traditions and Stockade Valentine flamingos are waiting to see whether a flamboyance (flock) of flamingos will appear this year at Lawrence’s Circle (read about the flamingo tradition here).  Tune in tomorrow, February 14, to see who’s visiting Lawrence.

Until then, please accept our best Valentine’s wishes (click to enlarge):

new snow on a gray morning

a little jamming along the Mohawk

Despite heavy rain and melting snow, the break-up of a relatively thin layer of ice probably helped us to avoid major ice jamming and resultant flooding today along the Stockade portion of the Mohawk River.  Ice accumulated along the banks, but there has been no major jamming at the CSX trestle and so no back-up and flooding. The slideshow below has photos taken today (Thursday, January 31, 2013) around 1 PM and then around 4 PM in Riverside Park and at the dead end of Washington Avenue. [update (Friday 8 AM): Water levels went down all night and the flood threat has passed.]

easing into 2013

Although I’ve been moving rather slowly since New Year’s Day, the first half of January 2013 has rushed by me in a blur.  There were no monumental photographic events so far this Year in the neighborhood (or, perhaps, I missed them), but the Stockade, the Mohawk, and Riverside Park retained their customary charms, amidst foggy mornings, muted sunsets, and rich blue skies, and despite a number of overwhelmingly gray days.

The above slideshow has a couple dozen photos that eased me into 2013.  The scenes include a foggy Saturday morning around Lawrence Circle and in Riverside Park; near-sunset views of Gateway Landing and of a barge used in the Western Gateway Bridge construction project from the rear of Cucumber Alley and the end of Washington Avenue; plus, a bright holiday bear banner and an “over-amputated” tree on Front Street.

This morning, December 27, 2012, we woke up to our first “real” snow storm of this winter season.  I didn’t have any sunshine to illuminate my photos, but it was a lovely gray morning for a walk around the Stockade (especially if you had good boots, and no snow to shovel).  A few scenes from my 8 AM snow stroll can be seen in the following Slideshow.

12-12-12 in the Stockade

Lawrence the Indian - Schenectady NY Stockade - 12-12-12 -12:12 PM

– Lawrence the Indian at his Circle – 12/12/12 at 12:12 pm –

The last “triple sequential date” of the 21st Century was a gorgeous, sunny December day, under blue skies, here at the Schenectady Stockade.  Below I’ve included pictures at Lawrence Circle at 12:12 pm, various buildings with a No. 12 address, and midday beauty and shadows in Riverside Park.  Enjoy. My plan to take photos of every building in the Stockade with a No. 12 address was frustrated, as I found out, going to each block, that there is no No. 12 on Washington Ave., Front St., Governor’s Lane, Ingersall Ave., So. Church St., or Green St.
