strolling the 2014 Outdoor Art Show

IMG_5668

Linda Biggers’ exhibit

. . Five hours of strolling, schmoozing and snapping photos at the 63rd Stockade Villagers’ Outdoor Art Show left me with a feeling of satisfaction, and a few hundred photographs to sort through, edit, cull, and select. The sunlight, shadows and blue skies turned the show into a playground for photographers (even the amateurs, like me).  The first result was the posting that went up last night, called “2014: an outstanding art show,” which has a couple dozen photos of the winning artists and their work.  This morning-after submission has over 80 additional images of the art, artists, architecture, assemblage, audience, and ambiance of the 2014 Outdoor Art Show.

1oas2014winnerslist  A gorgeous Sunday afternoon in the Stockade was the scene of an outstanding Outdoor Art Show, the 63rd presented around Lawrence Circle. Even our neighborhood curmudgeons kept praising the sunlight and temperature and crowd.

There was a lot more talent and enjoyable art than can fit around Lawrence’s winner Circle.  This might have been the first year when I heard no discouraging words, just appreciation, from the crowd as the awards were presented and displayed. Here is the list of impressive winning art, with examples mixed in:

original posting:

The 63rd Stockade Villagers’ Outdoor Art Show was prudently postponed until today (Sunday, September 7), from Noon to 4 P.M., due to the universal consensus among meteorologists that thunder-storms and rain were highly probable on Saturday.  We did not get the scary weather yesterday, but the forecast that Sunday would be sunny, comfortable and rain-free appears to be spot on.

Nonetheless, if you can’t get to Lawrence Circle today, or simply cannot wait until noon to experience this year’s Outdoor Art Show, you will find hundreds of Art Show images in our past coverage of the event:

OAS2013-LorraineRothExhib

OAS2010-CME2

As we do every year, suns along the Mohawk will be presenting scores of photos from today’s Stockade Outdoor Art Show, so please come back this evening to see the winning art and many other images of the Show from our perspective.

p.s. A little advocacy on behalf of the Stockade:

The editor-proprietor of suns along the Mohawk wants, as does a very large percentage of residents of the Stockade and  Schenectady County, to protect the Stockade neighborhood from the problems that are likely to flow if a casino is built a few blocks away at the old ALCO site. You can still attend the “public comment event” on September 22 or write to the Gaming Facility Location Board to voice your opinion. Click here for details. For more information about the many reasons to oppose the Schenectady casino, please see Stop the Schenectady Casino.

An article in Thursday’s Gazette titled “Rose Garden Pond fixed up, tour scheduled” (July 31, 2014, at C2) motivated me to make my annual Rose Garden photoshoot yesterday (Saturday).   The article explained:

IMG_5151 “The original pond was stagnant and built from concrete, which weathered over time and developed cracks. Decker’s Landscaping and Aquatics remodeled the pond, creating a small waterfall and creek to run under the 46-year-old bridge.”

When I got there with my photo mentor Yu Chang, a bridal group was gathered on the bridge.  The remodeled pond looked great, the roses were in great shape in the Garden, and the sun came out to illuminate leaves and draw intriguing shadows under the trees.

scenes from the 2014 Stockade Picnic

IMG_5085   The 2014 Stockade Picnic took place yesterday (Tuesday, July 22) evening, at its traditional location east of N. Ferry St. and the Pumphouse, in Riverside Park, along the Mohawk River.  Once again, the semi-potluck event was sponsored by the Safety Committee of the Stockade Association and Neighborhood Watch.

2014StockadePicnic-C&H1.

It was a suitably laidback, mellow and neighborly affair, on a warm and humid day. This year’s live entertainment was by the folkie and folksy duo Terry and Linda, who appear regularly at Arthur’s Market.

Many of the Stockade’s most sociable divas had to be elsewhere, and so we had a bit less sauciness, and no dancing to speak of, this year.  (Yes, we did miss you, Lydia, Sylvie, Susannah, and Connie.)

I hope this Slideshow will give you a good idea of  our good-neighbors event along the Mohawk.

Joanne Arco, the Balloon Lady, was very popular

The only noticeable difference this year was the addition of a table near the picnic with No Casino in Schenectady signs and Petitions. It was about as lowkey as an activist incursion can be, and Mohammed Hafez, Linda Kelleher and myself had a nice time chatting with picnickers who came over to sign and/or schmooze.  We did not get a boatload of signatures, but we did obtain our 100th signature against the casino by a Stockade resident or owner.(Click here for a copy of the Petition; and learn about the CasiNO campaign at stoptheschenectadycasino.com.)

Grave Beauty in the Stockade

StockadeCemeteriesCover.

FYI: I’ve put together another photobook.  It is titled “Grave Beauty: Cemeteries in the Schenectady Stockade.”  If you click the link, you can preview the entire 20-page book at Shutterfly.com without having to purchase it.  The book has photos taken of and from the cemeteries at St. George’s and First Presbyterian, plus three bonus pages taken on a lovely autumn day at Vale Cemetery.

Also, if you click on the Photobook tab at the bottom of the masthead, you will find links to each of my three extant photobook compilations, and any additional volumes added to the collection.

As I as say on the Photobooks page, I do not receive any of the proceeds when you buy a book from Shutterfly.

By my standards, the single-copy “retail” prices at their site are rather high if you are not using one of their many discount promotions. Registering for free might be a smart move, if you are not yet a member there, as they will start sending you offers that will save you money.

OrangeConeCemetery2  Shutterfly’s prices for bulk purchases (as few as 10 at a time), are much lower.  If a not-for-profit group would like to use one (or more) of my photobooks as a fundraiser, I would be pleased to assist them, taking no profit for myself.  You can contact me directly or leave a comment and I will get in touch.

Jumpin’ Jack’s fireworks 2014

IMG_4805  The 2014 pre-Fourth of July fireworks from Jumpin’ Jack’s Drive-in along the Mohawk River in Scotia were beautiful and enjoyable, celebration of both our nation’s Independence and the life of Jill Vanselow, an 11-year Jumpin’ Jack’s employee, who died one night before her favorite workday of the year.  See “Celebration, mourning at Jumpin’ Jack’s: Longtime worker dies in fire on eve of fireworks show” (Schenectady Gazette, June 28, 2014, by N. Campbell and M. McGuire; by subscription) Her fellow employees were in mourning on the Drive-in eatery’s biggest day of the year, and wrote Ms. Vanselow’s initials on their arms and hats as a remembrance of an upbeat and respected colleague.

IMG_4853

– gray smoke from the explosions was very noticeable this year, hanging midair over the Isle of the Cayugas, at times colored by the hues of the fireworks –

As it is our tradition here at suns along the Mohawk, the editor-photographer was across the River at the end of Cucumber Alley, behind his Stockade home, snapping scores of photos and hoping a sufficient number of them were in focus for a decent posting.   The scent of mosquito repellant, another tradition, followed me from perch to perch.

Due to a resolution problem, I’ve decided to display the photos of the Jumpin’ Jack’s fireworks in collage form.
