Tomorrow (Friday evening, June 28), I hope to balance the “science” of photographing fireworks without undue shaking and blurring with the “art” of  shaking and blurring just enough for an occasional image to produce pyrotechnic magic. (Well, that’s my excuse, anyway.) And, I’ll be trying to capture reflections of the pyroteccnics on the River.

a sunny Saturday stroll

IMG_4695  Last Saturday (May 17, 2014), I didn’t let the dreary task of taking a few more pictures of the Western Gateway Bridge sidewalks for my Guardrail Petition keep me from noticing how mid-afternoon sunlight can make almost anything (even a pile of mulch) look pretty.  In the slideshow below are photos I took on my stroll from the Bridge to North Church across Union, to Front St., and then down Governor’s Lane to Riverside Park, before turning up Washington Avenue to get home.

our Petition Campaign for curb guardrails on WGB

This past weekend, we began a WGB Curbside Guardrail Campaign, seeking signatures on a Petition calling for the New York State Department of Transportation to put sidewalk guardrails back along the curbs of the Western Gateway Bridge, for the protection of all sidewalk users, and of vehicles on the roadway.  The photo-flier above gives a concise description of the safety issues, showing that the WGB sidewalks are far more dangerous than before the Rehab Project.

For a detailed discussion of the sidewalk safety issues, with many photos and links to documents, see the Sidewalk Section of our earlier posting about the scenic views and sidewalk safety that have been reduced by the 2013 Rehabilitation Project.  At

WGB-petition Please consider printing out the Petition and Flier above to help in this Petition Campaign.  You can contact me by leaving a Comment, to return a Petition with signatures or for advice on seeking signatures.  If you live in Scotia or Schenectady or otherwise use WGB, please let your local leaders — political and business — know you want DOT to put guardrails back on the curbs of the Western Gateway Bridge.

Above and Below: On each end of the Western Gateway Bridge, there are many attractions for cyclists and pedestrians of all kinds and ages.  Let’s make the bridge safe for all of them, and motorists, too.

IMG_4696  p.s.  Ironic: A couple of friends pointed out to me recently that the block-long sidewalk that leads from Washington Ave. to the Bridge has a sturdy guardrail along the curb (even though traffic on that stretch has not had a chance yet to reach the 50 mph speed that vehicles typically achieve on WGB). There is also a sturdy fence 60″ high on the Binnekill side of the sidewalk, in contrast to the 42″ high railing and parapet on the Bridge over the Mohawk River.  The following collage — entitled Irony on WGB — tells the story (click on it for a larger version):

the floe of the seasons

ice floe in Schenectady's Riverside Park on the shore of the Mohawk River 03Feb2010 If you are at all like me, you’re quite happy to let this past winter slip away, but you’re already fretting over how soon it will surely be too hot in Schenectady.   To help remind you of the refreshing beauty of winter along the Mohawk, I’ve collected dozens of photos that are in my photobook “Jamming on the Mohawk“, and put them in a slideshow.  You might want to bookmark this posting when you need relief from the dog days of August.

Stockade cherry blossoms 2014 (days #2 to 5)

– looking south from 28 Washington Ave. –

cb2014_4277  . . . cb2014_4280  This afternoon (April 29, 2014, “Day #2”), I encountered a rare event that was too good to ignore: virtually no vehicles parked from #10 to #32 Washington Avenue, plus lovely clouds in a blue sky, with sunshine lighting clusters of the multiplying blossoms.  Just yesterday, I had complained that cars at the curb had ruined a lot of cherry blossom photos; and, I worried this morning that the rain and dark clouds coming this afternoon would reduce my chances for shooting our cherry blossom array over the next few days.

The slideshow below shows the results of this serendipity on my second day of memorializing the 2014 Stockade cherry blossoms. [for the first day’s posting, see “cherry blossom tease“.]  Note that, this being the Stockade, the curbs did not stay car-free for long. Luckily, the blossoms stayed beautiful.

updates: 15 more photos, taken on May Day, were added that evening; on May 2, 2014, another 14 photos were added about 7 PM.; plus a few on Sunday morning, May, 4, showing that a lot of blossoms had fallen in strong winds overnight.

At the foot of this posting is a Gallery with all the photos from this post  and the earlier one from April 28, 2014.

weeping cherry blossoms that alway impress

My annual visit to the lush stand of weeping cherry trees on the lawn of Congregation Gates of Heaven (at Ashmore Ave. and Eastern Parkway, at the Niskayuna town line), was rushed this afternoon (only a ten-minute stay). but you can get the taste of this heavenly treat from the slideshow below.  For more from CGOH, see our 2011 post “peaceful cherry blossoms”.

Our Washington Avenue cherry blossom array is not fully mature yet, but it is already lovely.  Here’s a slideshow of shots taken about 8:30 this sunny morning. By this weekend, and especially with a blue sky, it will be gorgeous on Washington Avenue and many other blocks of the Stockade.  We naturally plan to shoot and post images of our cherry and magnolia blossoms, plus tulips, forsythia and more, as we move into May, and hope you enjoy this foreplay.

a Mohawk River jam session for your Easter basket

My weather predictions and river forecasts occasionally go awry, but it seems safe to say this Good Friday morning that there will be no Spring flooding this year in the Schenectady Stockade due to ice jams along the Mohawk River.  Although I am glad that my neighbors won’t be suffering property damage, emotional distress, or general fear of flooding, it is difficult not to be a bit nostalgic for the stunning beauty and photographic opportunities that can come with ice floes and jams, or sunlight reflecting off water that has overflown its banks to transform familiar places and scenes.

If you are not sure why I would praise the strange beauty and quirky juxtaposition of ice floes, I suggest you take a look at the photo-book I just created at Shutterfly, called “Jamming on the Mohawk : ice floes and jams along the Mohawk River near the Schenectady Stockade.” It is 20 pages with over 60 shots taken along the Stockade stretch of the Mohawk River over the past five years.

You can click on this link, “Jamming on the Mohawk, to “preview” the book at Shutterfly at no cost, with a Full Screen version available.  Below, I’ve also inserted the pages of Jamming on the Mohawk in a Slideshow, and in a Gallery that is at the bottom of this posting.

Note: I have chosen not to make any profit from my Stockade photography hobby.  Should you order a copy of one of my books from Shutterfly, I get none of the proceedings.  If you decide to order from them, I hope you will be able to use various discounts and promotional codes that Shutterfly frequently offers to those who register with them.  Whether you view a book online or in hardcopy, I hope you will enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of the Stockade neighborhood and riverfront.
